If you don't know what handwaving means, check here.

I chose the name "professor Smith" partly as a tribute to PhD Comics, but also because there are several well-known researchers in evolutionary linguistics called "Smith". In fact, the 2008 proceedings of the Evolang conference (edited by Andrew Smith, Kenny Smith and Ramon Ferrer i Cancho's can be called Smith, Smith & Smith (2008), since Ramon's last name is the Spanish equivalent of "Smith" (or so I have been told by Andrew). Of course, I do not mean to suggest at all that it's the Smiths who are doing the handwaving!!

Actually, ferrer is Catalan for ‘smith’, not Spanish (the equivalent Spanish is herrero, which can also be found as a surname).

I stand corrected. I never know when something is Catalan or Spanish.
